Tourism and Climate change
Our research relates to several subjects:
|
The effects of the climate change on the climatic and nonclimatic resources of tourism.
|
The evaluation of the contribution of tourism to the climate change, mainly through transport.
|
The awareness-raising of this problem by the actors of the sector, and the effects possible of the mitigation policies (taxation of kerosene for example) on tourism |
Whith a particular interest to study the climate change impacts on the tourist activities and the possible adaptation strategies, Jean-Paul Céron wrote an article for the first report of the French Mission on Greenhouse Effect (MIES): "Tourisme et changement climatique". This report, heading "Impact potentials of the climate change in France in XXIe century", was published in 1998, with a second edition in 2000.
Ghislain Dubois was interested in
this question within the framework of a work
undertaken for the
French
Institute of the Environment (Ifen), evaluating the impacts of tourism on greenhouse
gas emissions.
In parallel, other works dealing with the same problems were undertaken worldwide, mostly by isolated academics. The real international interest developed in 2003.
Since then, TEC was involved in major events, like the first international conference on tourism and climatic change organized in Djerba in april 2003 by the World Tourism Organization (WTO), which led to a declaration on tourism and climate change. Jean-Paul CERON and Ghislain Dubois presented a communication entitled "Tourisme et changement climatique, une relation à double sens". Other conferences followed this one:
|
The workshop "Tourism, Climate changes and the Environment", in Milano, in june 2003, with a communication entitled "Draft proposal for a research agenda";
|
The conference "Climate Changes and Tourism" in Warsaw, in november of the same year, with a new communication entitled "Mobility patterns prospects and their impact on climate change".
|
The 2° international workshop "Climate, Tourism and Recreation" of Kolimbari (Crète) in june 2004.The Eco-Efficiency of Tourism" was a joint paper presented during this event. |
During
this same very productive time, a specific research network
was established,
éCLAT, the Research network on tourism and climate change.
Following these first investigations, TEC entered a phase of research giving place to the drafting of several articles and the publications of specialized works. These publications propose for example to modelize tourism flows and their associated impacts, to imagine scenarios for the years to come... And also to analize the possible solutions and strategies. All this material can be donwloaded in the "articles and other scientific publications" section.
Ghislain Dubois undertook a PhD on the
subject and Jean-Paul Céron is the lead author for tourism issues in the
4e report of the
Intergovernmental Panel
on Climate Change (IPCC).
